First impressions last. First impressions not only have a direct influence on our social lives but also our careers. An individual’s skin can play a pivotal role in their self confidence and self esteem which in turn affects the way one conducts themselves when presented with meeting new people for the first time. Clear skin is not solely affected by the devastating effects of acne, but also blackheads, and whiteheads. The difference between these is vast and many misconceptions about these various afflictions are present. In order to gain a greater understanding of these various skin conditions that impede clear skin, an explanation must be given into what they exactly are and what causes them.
Acne is an inflammatory human disease relating to the sebaceous glands of the skin; these are characterised by papules, pustules or comedones. Beneath your skin’s surface there are many follicles (commonly called pores) with sebaceous glands attached to them. These glands produce and secrete a protective oil called sebum. During puberty, testosterone levels rise in both sexes. This excess testosterone is taken into the sebaceous glands thereby increasing sebum production. At the same time, the keratin in your skin becomes unusually sticky causing the sebum to plug your pores and prevent skin shedding. If the follicle opens, the keratinous material escapes through it and an open comedone or blackhead results. If the follicle does not open sufficiently, a closed comedone or whitehead results, within which inflammation can occur. Most acne sufferers have a combination of both. Blackheads however are a little different.
Blackheads are a specific type of acne called open comedone. Blackheads are a prelude to acne, with excess oil being produced and remaining inactive within the pores of the skin. This excess oil starts to build up. Once this excess oil is exposed to air, the head of it turns black. There are several ways in which blackheads can be addressed in order to get clear skin. One way is to treat the affected area with blackhead strips. Blackhead strips work to a certain degree but do not eradicate the problem. A popular method of removing blackheads is to steam the affected area first, then proceed with an over the counter blackhead facial scrub.
Much like blackheads whiteheads are a form of acne that afflicts adolescents and adults alike. White heads are often mistaken for acne, due to their appearance and shape. White heads however are different and should be removed very carefully. White heads derive from the buildup of accumulated oil in the pores of skin. If the pore of the skin closes up, the area can become inflamed, with a white head forming a few days later. In order to treat whiteheads and achieve clear skin, several steps can be followed. To treat and prevent whiteheads a gentle facial wash should be used twice a day. This will cleanse the skin of any dirt or impurities that are present. After washing an exfoliate should be used in order to remove the dead skin cells that have accumulated on the surface area of the face. Excessive washing and scrubbing, can also irritate skin, so don’t over do it! Once exfoliated an oil - free moisturiser should be applied with special attention to the t – zone areas of the face. Last step is to steam the affected area once a week. This assists in the removal of deep seeded dirt, oils and dead skin.
First impressions can define future relationships, whether they be personal relationships or business relationships. The physical afflictions of acne, blackheads and whiteheads can hinder the level of confidence and self esteem that a sufferer of any one of these afflictions can have. While many individuals suffering from these different skin conditions consider themselves unlucky, there are several avenues of treatment one can pursue in order to achieve clear skin.
